NCBD Picks for February 25, 2026: The Comics That Actually Matter

New Comic Book Day is the best day of the week.

Fresh stories. New jumping-on points. That moment when the pull box hits the counter and you remember why you love comics in the first place.

But with that excitement comes overload.

Dozens of releases. Competing “must-reads.” Hype everywhere.

That’s where this list comes in.

These are the top comics hitting shelves Wednesday, February 25, 2026—curated from this week’s releases and filtered through one simple question:

Which of these will still be worth talking about six months from now?

Let’s get into it.

Marvel Headliner: A Crossover That Matters

Spider-Man swings in vibrant red-blue costume, foregrounding Venom and Carnage with sharp teeth. "Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral" text.

Marvel is kicking off a Spider-Man and Venom crossover—and this isn’t a throwaway team-up.

Why this one stands out:

  • Event-level stakes without full event fatigue

  • Directly feeds into both ongoing titles

  • Built as a clean entry point for new readers

Collector insight: Spider-Man crossover 1's don’t always spike immediately—but they do vanish once readers realize they’re required reading.

Marvel Relaunch Watch

Man in black suit with skull emblem, holding two smoking guns against dark background. Text: "Marvel The Punisher." Intense, bold mood.

Marvel doesn’t relaunch Punisher casually.

This issue marks a clear reset point, making it one of the strongest Marvel entry points of the week.

Why this matters:

  • Fresh creative direction

  • Clean jumping-on issue

  • Historically strong performance in collected editions

Collector insight: Punisher 1's rarely explode—but they’re consistently back-ordered once readers miss issue one.

DC Prestige: The Absolute Universe Continues

Comic cover split: Left shows Martian Manhunter with a green and red pattern, hand raised. Right features a fierce woman in a city, grappling opponent.

DC’s Absolute line continues to be one of its strongest storytelling experiments.

These books reward readers who want:

  • Deeper character work

  • Larger-format, prestige storytelling

  • Long-form narrative payoff

Collector insight: Absolute Universe books aren’t about hype—they’re about staying power. The Dan Hipp Absolute MM cover is perhaps one of my favorite covers this week.

DC One-Shot Worth Grabbing

Comic cover split in two: left shows superheroes and "New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident"; right features heroes in a dark, moody scene.

One-shots like this are easy to overlook—and easy to regret skipping later.

Why it’s worth attention:

  • Self-contained story

  • Deep DC lore connections

  • Perfect entry point without long-term commitment

Collector insight: The Last New History was alot of fun and well-made DC one-shots age quietly—but they do age well.

Indie Variant Pick (Low Print, High Interest)

Blonde woman in a cropped top and shorts smokes a cigarette. She's backlit by a yellow spotlight and wears a black jacket and boots. Tattoos visible.

This is the type of book collectors miss while chasing bigger names.

Why it stands out:

  • Smaller publisher

  • Ratio variant scarcity

  • Distinct visual identity

Collector insight: Indie ratio variants often outperform expectations once availability dries up. Sveta Shubina is one of THE hottest artists out there right now. You can almost bank on her ratios selling 2x the ratio.

Indie & Creator-Owned Continuity Picks

A woman in white with pearls and a sly smile holds a dove on her hand. The background is black, text reads "HYDE STREET," and the mood is mysterious.

Not every great comic starts at 1.

These ongoing indie titles reward readers who stick around.

Why these matter:

  • Established story momentum

  • Growing word-of-mouth

  • Strong trade-read potential

Collector insight: Hyde Street is one of my favorite ongoing titles coming from Ghost Machine - high praise considering how great Geiger and Rook have been. Mid-Run indie issues are also where demand starts building.
